I teach a variety of math related topics from middle school and high school math to SAT and ACT test prep. Pricing starts at $125 per hour for high school math subjects and SAT / ACT prep, and $100 an hour for middle school math subjects. 20% off for students from my alma mater, South Meck HS! Charlotte Tutoring

I typically tutor math subjects and SAT, ACT test prep to students in various neighborhoods in mostly South Charlotte, as well as occasionally students from Matthews, Pineville, and surrounding areas of Charlotte. I reside in South Charlotte, occasionally tutoring at book stores or coffee shops, but do most tutoring sessions via Zoom videoconferencing to save time and commute costs for both myself and my students. 1. What is your approach to tutoring?

My primary goal is to tutor in a way so that the student can perform in class and on tests on their own without my support, with focus points customized to their strengths and weaknesses. My belief is that there are different levels of competencies when it comes to tutoring. The basic level is to understand the material. The next level is how well you can explain concepts - almost all qualified teachers and tutors understand the material, but their ability to explain with clarity and simplicity is not universal. Finally, the best tutors can explain concepts well, as well as structure lessons in a way so that the students can recall and integrate concepts on their own. Just because a student nods “yes I understand” after an explanation doesn’t mean they can actually do it on their own. This is an aspect I pay much attention to.

2. What is your experience in tutoring?

I have been tutoring math, SAT, and ACT test prep for over 10 years in Charlotte and online. I scored 2380/2400 on the SAT in 2012, and started tutoring the next year, my senior year at South Meck HS (Valedictorian, 2014). I continued throughout my college years at Duke University, and also after graduation, when I was working at an investment firm. These days, I prefer to work on my own entrepreneurial ventures, and enjoy tutoring due to working with students and ability to set my own schedule!

3. Where do you usually do lessons with students?

I predominantly do lessons via Zoom to save on commute time for my students and myself. Occasionally I will have in person availability in South Charlotte, typically at a coffee shop near Stonecrest or Arboretum.

4. Are there any discounts?

Yes! Your first lesson with me is always half price - think of it as a discounted intro lesson. Subsequent lessons are all at my standard rates. If you purchase multi lesson packages in advance, there is a 5% discount for a 5 lesson package, and 10% discount for a 10 lesson package.

5. What subjects do you specialize in?

I specialize in high school math and SAT, ACT test prep. High school math would include all algebra, geometry, and precalculus topics. I can also do pre-algebra topics in middle school.

6. What are typical results that you see from tutoring?

This course depends on the context for which I am tutoring and how much time I have with each student. Typically, last minute prep in 1-2 weeks at twice a week can have improvements, but results vary a lot due to how busy the student is and if they have time for the material and lessons to sink in. I see the most consistent improvements in students I have for a particular subject over 1-3 months with lessons twice a week. For the SAT, this has typically ranged from 100-300 point improvements on the 1600 point scale over 3 months, with an average of around 150-200 points. Usually there are diminishing marginal returns for tutoring twice a week for a single subject beyond 3-4 months, at which point, it is probably better to move on to other subjects where there’s more room for improvement, or decrease frequency just to maintain the level.

7. What are your tutoring rates?

High school level math and SAT, ACT test prep lessons start at $125 per hour. Middle school level math subjects lessons start at $100 per hour.

8. Is there a referral program?

Yes! For every student that signs up with me from your referral, you get a lesson at half price! All you have to do is to mention who you referred, and I will confirm with them about your referral.

9. What time of year is best for tutoring?

The best time for tutoring depends on whether the student is preparing for a specific test or classroom academics. Typically for standardized tests like the SAT or ACT, I believe the best time to start is 4-5 months before the scheduled test date. Much of the improvement happens in the first 3 months of preparation. If you leave less than a month to prepare, things can feel rushed, whereas if you start more than 6 months before the test, you can lose momentum, motivation, and memory for what you prepared.
